After an easy, quick walk in the morning, a steep descend through some villages follows. The downhill continues as the trail passes through the fields of Simbu village and keeps on going all the way up to the river (Pa Khola). Now, a climb starts to go up for the next good couple of hours and pass through a higher secondary school at Kunjari, and finally reached Bhanjyang, (the top). After Bhanjyang, the trail is more subtle and undulates for less than half an hour to reach a small settlement of a couple of houses at Kade Bhanjyang (6 hours) (Overnight at Tea house)

A short climb after Kade Bhanjyang is soon followed by a gradual drop and reaches Khesewa in around 20 minutes. Now, the trail once again drops steeply through this long extended village down to a small stream. This steep drop takes a little less than an hour and soon is followed by a gradual uphill but with few steep sections. The trail steadies a bit and then undulates and reaches a small village and once again undulates but gradually gains height until it reaches Phunglung village in less than half an hour. Now a gradual drop starts a descend through yet another terraced field of this big extended village which soon turns very steep for the next half an hour. Once again, a more undulating trail is followed by a steep trail to the top of the ridge and a more steady trail arrives near Phumphe village. (6 hours) (Overnight at Tea house)

A good descent for less than half an hour, followed by another good climb for a bit more than an hour leads to Mamankhe. A gradual downhill soon turns into a steep climb. The climb becomes gentler but continuously keeps going up and undulates for a while. The morning steep part for about an hour and the next undulating trail takes nearly an hour. The valley starts going down through a thin forest for a little less than an hour. After the drop, a brief climb leads to a wider valley of Thungim. Continue climb lead us to Sherpaguan stay overnight at sherpaguan tea house about 6 hour's walk.

Finally, the uphill ends and a brief leveled ground leads to Lashe Bhanjyang. After Lashe Bhanjyang, a brief drop that goes near by a landslide section is followed a half an hour climb. (by the side of this ridge is a sheer drop of nearly 200 meters or more) The climb turns into a steep drop for the next hour and half and meets Torongden River at the bottom of a narrow valley. Now the trail undulated through the forest but consistently goes up for the next hour and after crossing a simple wooden bridge, we arrive at Torongton. (8 hours) (Overnight at tea house)

A very steep climb starts the day and after the first half an hour of a steep climb, the valley widens up. The trail passes through several pasturelands and would also pass through a yak shed on one of these meadows. (they move the shed depending upon the seasons) After the first meadow, views of Rathong (6678 meters) and Kokthang (6148 meters) appear. The trail becomes fairly comfortable after the first two meadows and on the third meadow, just beneath a huge ridge, on flat land is Ramche. (5 hours) (Overnight at Tea house)

As the valley heads deeper, Kabru (7412 meters), and Rathong (6678 meters) towers like skyscrapers on the right. After a couple of hours up in the valley with a couple of meadows on the way, the trail slowly starts to climb and all four summits of Kanchenjunga (8586 meters) start to appear enclosing the valley. Finally, the Oktang viewpoint (4780 meters) appears ending the trail with the gigantic Kanchenjunga (8586 meters) and Kabru Range kissing the sky and the long extending views of Yalung Kang Glacier extending down the valley. The trek retraces back following the same route to Tseram. (7 hours) (Overnight at Tea house)

The first two hours are through woods and a rocky trail continues with views of wide valleys and for a brief moment, Kanchenjunga (8586 meters) can be viewed. This straight steep climb, for little less than around 4 hours gets to the first pass. After the first pass, the trail briefly drops and once again climbs for the second pass. Views of several smaller 6000-meter peaks and Makalu appear from the second pass. Once again, the trail drops briefly and then again climb for the third pass (here a Mirgin La signboard is present). Now, The trail continuously drops and zigzags through a rocky trail and finally reaches a small stream to reach Sele La. (8 hours) (Overnight at Tea house)
Altitude: 4290 m Accommodation: Tea House / Lodge Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
  • 14
The first bit is an easy walk with bits of a steep drop. The trail is a bit rocky and after the first hour it gets to the first pass (there are prayer flags). It continues in a similar way until the second pass but sharply starts to drop through the forest of Rhododendron trees for nearly an hour and a half. A small flat ground is followed by a hydropower water pipe that leads into the wide valley with the big village of Ghunsa. (3-4 hours) (Overnight at Tea house)
Altitude: 3475 m Accommodation: Tea House / Lodge Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • 15
The trail heads deeper into the valley following the Ghunsa Khola on a fairly comfortable terrain but passes through several small landslide areas. After a couple of hours the trail enters the rocky river and bed crosses Ghunsa Khola. Another brief comfortable walk leads to a bottom of a waterfall and then a steep climb through a difficult landslide section continues for the next half an hour. The hard work is rewarded with different angled views of Jannu (7710 meters). A brief drop shows the wider views of the valley and several unnamed 6000 meters peaks (Tengkoma is one of these peaks) but all these disappear as we enter Khambachen, a village where two valleys meet. Fantastic views of Sobhi Thongje and Gabhur are on the south of Khambachen and Sarphu on the west completes the Panorama. (6 hours) (Overnight at Tea house)

Private Kanchenjunga Trek In April, May, 2026

We wanted a private Kanchenjunga trek for our 2nd visit to Nepal & queried a handful of agencies. Himal stood out with his responsiveness & knowledge of the region, and we quickly opted to book with VHT. We couldn't be happier with the entire experience. Himal was patient with our many questions and accommodating of every request. He put together a package with a fair price that exactly matched our wants and never made us feel rushed, pressured, or as if we were causing any difficulty at all.

We are independent travellers but appreciated a personal transfer from KTM, especially late at night after a long journey. It was an unexpected treat that our trekking guide, Ishwar, met us at the airport and got us to our selected hotel. After a brief meetup with Himal & Ishwar, the next day we were left to do as we liked - this combo of support + free time suited us perfectly.

On-trek, we were constantly impressed by guide Ishwar and porter Brish (also a rising guide, bonus!). This top-tier team made our 2+ weeks together perfectly frictionless. From long jeep rides on sketchy roads in questionable weather, to late hotel arrivals, to meals in places with/without a menu at any time of day, to coming off-trek a day early after days without cell signal, we never thought about logistics because it all happened with zero effort from us. On top of his ninja-like project manager skills, Ishwar is an insanely generous and incredibly experienced mountain guide, and as the days passed, we realized how lucky we were to have been paired with him. He'd regularly strike up conversations with people we saw, developing/maintainining relationships, gleaning beta on current conditions, finding an answer to any question, or aiding in making a request possible.

He noticed our likes, listened to our preferences, and used this input to tailor each day to our personal style. We are reasonably fit with extensive mountain experience and were a bit apprehensive that even an itinerary requested by us might ultimately feel restrictive on-trail. This was a needless worry as Ishwar assured us that our progress & path would be determined by weather and our own fitness/desires, not a printout. He provided the perfect mix of accommodation and voice of reason when we discussed options for each day. We encountered only a handful of other groups during our trip, and it was obvious that we had the most experienced and professional team.

Of all the trekkers we met, we were the only ones with a clear view of Kangchenjunga from the south, because of where we stayed (Ramche) and when we left for Oktang (cold, early). We are thankful for Ishwar's specific expertise, as that morning was a highlight of our trek. As icing on the cake, Ishwar is a really great human, and we simply enjoyed spending each day with him. Brish played a less visible but still invaluable role in our daily activities. He capably carried our bags over every type of terrain, none of it easy, and always with a smile. He is sweet, funny, and kind enough not to laugh at our beginner Nepali or our preference to enjoy afternoon tea outside on a rock instead of in a dark dining area. By the end of our trek, we were sharing games and stories, and it's clear he'll make an excellent guide as he transitions into this new role.

Post-trek, we stayed in the Ilam region a few days (+ an extra night). It was unexpected but serendipitous that while Brish returned to Kathmandu, Ishwar remained with us - rather than being at all awkward, this transformed our short time in Fikkal into a 2ary highlight of the trip. Ishwar opened doors to experiences we would never have had on our own - tea processing tour, tuk-tuk rides, and a brand new monastery. He accompanied us enough so we felt completely taken care of, but then left us to our own devices so that we never felt stifled. In short, Ishwar's dedication to both service and hospitality knows no boundaries and shines in any circumstance.

Huge thanks to Himal for coordinating a near-perfect 3+ week trip.... only seeing a snow leopard could have improved our trek! 10/10 for Visit Himalaya Treks.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek: An Epic Travel, November 2025.

This trek was my third Nepal visit and the first time I joined Himal and his team of VHT. It turned out to be my best Nepal experience so far. I was lucky with my previous guides, but they were no longer available. So I searched the Internet and found Himal’s agency. I was convinced by the references from his previous guiding career. I now realize that I have discovered a small world of Nepali mountain guides and mountain lovers from all over the world who come together repeatedly. Most of his clients return, and yeah :), I feel the same way.

I trekked the Kanchenjunga route in the anticlockwise direction, visiting both the base camps of Kanchenjunga and the base camp of Januu Himal. Already, the start of the journey is very interesting, as the approach is by jeep through the villages and towns of the Rai and Limbu people. We then trekked from Sukhetar over Lali Kharka, Kande Bhanjyang, Phumphe Danda, and Yamphudin, navigating between fields over paths which only the villagers use. The interactions with the locals, even if limited by the language barrier, were priceless for me.

There were many opportunities to learn about agriculture, crops, animals, drinks, construction techniques, and habits. The second reward of the journey came in the form of beautiful forests, which included both coniferous stands higher up and broadleaf jungle of the lower altitudes, namely below Ghunsa. The 'panda habitat' bamboo forest was simply a fairy tale. The third reward came, of course, in the form of the mountain vistas. Apart from Kanchenjunga itself, which one can see both from the 'friendlier' southern side and from the formidably looking north side, there is Januu Himal. It feels like the Ama Dablam of this region, but in a row with Sobi Thongje and Ghabur Peak, it radiates magic. Below it, sitting on a small plateau, is the sacred rock of the Limbu, as if talking to the mountain itself.

I had a very friendly duo to travel with, Keshab as a guide and Raju as a porter. There was always something to talk about or laugh about, and at the same time, they were very courteous and attentive. Himal warned me that I should expect a lower level of comfort. I found it like parts of the Manaslu trek. We stayed in small teahouses or homestays. The least comfortable were the highest places, such as Lonak or Ramche, because of the cold and because the teahouses are few and small and often fill to capacity. The logistics of the trip were flawless, and my feeling was always that I was in good hands. To me, this was excellent guidance.

Kanchenjunga - Superb Trek With A Knowledgeable And Efficient Trekking Company. October / November - 2025.

My 4th trek with Visit Himalaya Treks, this time to Kachenjunga North and South base camps (circuit). The 26-day trip was extremely well organised and ran smoothly, despite the recent adverse weather conditions in the region and landslips necessitating route diversions. We did not manage to reach Oktang viewpoint or climb Drohmo Ri because of the heavy snowfall, but did overnight at Ramche and Pang Pema.

It was a tough but highly enjoyable trek; the best I have done to date in Nepal. Our guide and porters were excellent, and I can throughly recommend both this trek and Visit Himalaya Treks as a company. I also added a 2-night safari stay at Chitwan onto the end of the trip, which Himal arranged quickly and efficiently for me.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Third Trip With Visit Himalaya Treks

This was our third trip with Visit Himalaya Treks, having previously completed the Annapurna and Everest Base Camp Treks. This was a challenging trek in a remote area, which demanded skillful management, especially with a group of seven trekkers. As on our previous treks, Himal and his team's organization and attention to detail were impeccable throughout.

Special thanks go to our guide Krishna Bohara who had led our previous treks. He is extremely attentive and goes above and beyond in keeping his clients safe and well-informed before, during, and after each day of the itinerary. Thanks also, to our assistant guide, Sangay who was also the group chef, for providing us with great food, despite the limitations of menus in this remote area. Thanks also to the porters and a special mention to Puran for keeping us entertained - he will be a great guide in the future.

All in all another fantastic trek in a beautiful area which will last in our memories forever. We look forward to our next trek with Visit Himalaya Treks. Thanks again and Namaste Himal, Raj, and all the team.

Kanchenjunga Trek

FAQs

We always try to be flexible to design the trip itinerary for our client’s needs. However, if you are not convinced as our suggested itinerary then off-course you are always welcome to customize or change the trip itinerary.

Holiday should never be about making it to the final point quickly. Along your trek, we can add days at your request with additional costs to cover guides, porters, accommodation, and food.

An average physical fitness should be maintained prior to booking a trek. Any sort of illness or recent medical problems should be mentioned while booking a trip. Most of our itineraries are prepared to give you maximum time to acclimatize and pace-setting on the treks would be done according to your convenience. If you are having regular medication then tell us before the trip started which would be better for us to give you the physical feedback.

Our main concern is your safety. We never compromised on your safety during the Trekking and all our guides are properly trained and well equipped to take care of our client's safety in even the remote areas as well.

There would be always back support in case of an emergency situation like severe high altitude sickness or accident (which is least expected), you will be sent to the nearest hospital if possible otherwise rescued by a helicopter and sent you to the hospital as soon as possible. Since you are entirely liable for all the expenses incurred for the use of such emergency services, please make sure that your travel insurance covers both- medical and emergency evacuation costs.

It is not a problem at all because in a mountain most of the tea house/lodges serve vegetarian food as well and our guide will take care at the time cooking and on a camping trek, our cook and staffs will care all about the food section.

Most of the lodges in the mountains are the basic ones like a guest house or tea house style. On a few major towns or settlements, where are the possibilities we provide you with the best accommodation! Also, it depends upon the service packages.

Lately, most of the teahouses have electricity supply even with solar panels. So, charging your gadgets is not a problem at all. But charging your battery you should have to pay an additional fee (US$ 1 to 3 approx. per hour.), in order to get your gadgets to be charged.

Now a day’s most of the major village has a cell phone network connection. However, in a remote area where cell phone does not work, and even if there is not any other communication access then we send satellite phone along with our guide so you can always be in touch with your family.

Yes, either you can store the same hotel as you stayed or we can store your goods with us safely in our office free of cost.

The luggage must not exceed up to 20 kilos. A trekking helper (porter) carries baggage of less than 15 kilos. This bag can be received at the end of each day’s trek and you should carry the rest of the weight as a day bag with all your money and valuables inside it.

This is a difficult thing to gauge. We have seen everything from USD 25 to USD 900 per person for guides and porters. Tipping is not required, but a small gesture of thanks to your guides and local porters. The level of the tip should reflect the level of satisfaction from and personal involvement with your guide. However, we recommend you to spend a minimum of 10% of your total trip cost for tipping the entire local staff.
